While they won’t be going to Miami after squandering their chance at a BCS bowl, Rutgers will still be heading to Florida for the bowl season.
According to Keith Sargeant of the Home News Tribune, Rutgers will be playing in the Russel Athletic Bowl on December 28 against ACC opponent Virginia Tech. They finished the season 6-6 after being ranked as high as No. 13 in the country.
The Hokies are a former member of the Big East before bolting for the ACC in 2004. The schools have played each other 14 times, with Virginia Tech leading the series 11-3.
While it’s not a BCS bowl, this is still the best bowl Rutgers has been to in the program’s history.
An official announcement of Rutgers’ bowl destination will come on Sunday.
