Now, Rutgers is just waiting on an invitation.
The Big Ten will formally invite Rutgers to their conference today, and the school will announce its departure tomorrow according to The Star-Ledger who cites an anonymous source. According to that source, Rutgers hopes to join the Big East by 2014.
Rutgers would be the ninth team since 2004 to leave the Big East. Their buyout from the Big East would be $10 million and they would have to give 27 months notice.
However, the Big East allowed West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse to leave earlier than the 27-month requirement by paying a higher exit fee. The aforementioned schools paid a fee of 20 million.
Maryland’s board of regents voted earlier today to leave the ACC and accept an invite from the Big Ten, a move that opened the door for Rutgers.
