Rutgers begins preparing for Virginia Tech

PISCATAWAY – With Rutgers beginning to fully install their game plan against Virginia Tech in the Russell Athletic Bowl, head coach Kyle Flood delved into what he’s seen on film of the Hokies on both sides of the ball.

“Very physically strong. Very athletic,” Flood said of Virginia Tech’s defense. “I think they have a lot of guys on that defense that are going to have opportunities to play at the next level. A little bit more pressure than I think the people in the past from years ago [recall], but they’re still playing their base defense as well and they’re still playing defense on a high level.”

As for their offense, Flood is well aware that their success on that side of the ball is based on quarterback Logan Thomas.

“The key to what they do on offense stars with their quarterback. He’s their leading rusher and obviously their leading passer being their quarterback and he’s their playmaker. He’s a special kind of player,” Flood said, adding, “We got to minimize his affect on the game if we’re going to slow them down on offense.”

One of the things the Thomas does is carry the ball. A lot. The 6-foot-6, 260 pounder leads Virginia Tech in rushing with 528 yards.

“A lot of their offense has a read aspect to it where they’re going to hand the ball off if you give them one look and they may keep it if you give them another look,” Flood said. “And they have designed ways to run the quarterback to make sure you can’t completely eliminate him from the game plan.”
