Rutgers has accepted the bid to represent the Big East in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, FL. Rutgers will be pitted against an ACC team – likely Virginia Tech – for the game, which will occur Friday, December 28, at 5:30 p.m. at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The game will air on ESPN.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in the Russell Athletic Bowl and we thank the great people at Florida Citrus Sports for the invitation,” Athletic Director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. “Orlando is an easily accessible, phenomenal bowl destination which will offer our fans, student-athletes, staff and guests a host of activities, events, and top-notch hospitality.”
Rutgers (9-3, 4-2 Big East) is 5-2 all-time in bowl games, winning five straight, tied for the best active streak in the country with Mississippi State. This will be their seventh bowl appearance in the last eight years.
While it’s not the BCS bowl the team coveted, it is still the best bowl in the program’s history.
The last time Rutgers played an ACC opponent in a bowl was in 2008, when the Scarlet Knights defeated N.C. State 29-23 in the Papa John’s Bowl.
“After winning a share of the Championship for the first time in school history, it is a great reward for our football family to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl in beautiful Orlando,” head coach Kyle Flood said. “We are excited to continue our season against an ACC opponent in one of the best destinations to be in during bowl season.”
