Kyle Flood sticking with Janarion Grant as Rutgers’ punt returner despite fumbles

PISCATAWAY – After a 100-yard kickoff return to start his collegiate career, freshman Janarion Grant would end the game with a couple of fumbles on punt returns, one of which was recovered by Fresno State and resulted in an eventual touchdown drive.

However, head coach Kyle Flood would have sent Grant a third time if given the opportunity, and he will give him the start at punt returner against Norfolk State on Saturday.

“He’ll be out there again this week,” Flood said. “And I think when you’re doing that in college for the first time and you have to run up to it for the first time – I would have liked to see him run up to it and either catch it on the bounce or make the poison call and get away from it.”

While the punts Grant muffed appeared to be muffs, Flood didn’t used that as an excuse.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily the trajectory of the ball,” Flood said. “Its’ really the distance you have to move that the guys are trying to return them.”
