Kyle Flood Hopes To Redshirt All But Three Of Rutgers’ Freshmen

By Matt Sugam

PISCATAWAY – With the highest rated recruiting class in school history, you’d expect to see quite a few freshmen on the field. But with a senior-laden team, head coach Kyle Flood has had the luxury of keeping his top 25 freshmen class out of game action.

Through four games, only three freshmen have seen the field. Defensive end Darius Hamilton, wide receiver Leonte Carroo and kicker Kyle Federico.

Spending the bye week giving the upperclassmen shorter practices, Flood’s been able to evaluate the freshman class. And he hopes they’ll all get that extra year of eligibility.

“I think we would lean towards redshirting the guys we are redshirting right now unless injuries forced us in a different direction,” Flood said.

Barring Rutgers’ can stay healthy, the only guys that haven’t seen the field that appeared they would during training camp are linebackers Quanzell Lambert and Steve Longa. Now the two will redshirt barring an emergency.

“Lambert and Longa were in that grey area and I think right now we would lean towards not using them right now,” Flood said. “But your hand can get forced a little because they are taking reps with the two-deep so they’re not on the scout team…so they’re taking reps because they have to be ready if need be.”
