FIU’s Mario Cristobal fired 10 months after turning down Rutgers

10 months ago, Mario Cristobal was a signature away from the head coaching job at Rutgers after Greg Schiano bolted for the NFL. However, Cristobal turned down the job to stay at FIU

Now, Cristobal is looking for work.

The former Rutgers assistant under Schiano from 2001-03 was fired by FIU this morning.

The Panthers went 3-9 this season. Cristobal took over the downtrodden program in 2007.

FIU athletic director Pete Garcia called the season “a total collapse” and felt the program needed to go in a different direction.

After winning just one game in 2007, FIU won eight games in 2011. In his six season at the helm, Cristobal led FIU to two bowl games. He finished his career there 27-47.
