Rutgers basketball has its first verbal commit of the class of 2013.
South Kent (CT) combo guard Shane Rector has committed to Rutgers sources told SNY.tv, which both Rector and his high school coach Kelvin Johnson later confirmed.
The 6-foot-1, 165 pounder recently told SNY’s Adam Zagoria that Rutgers was at the top of his list.
“I just liked what coach [Mike] Rice and Rutgers has to offer,” Rector told SNY.tv “And I felt it would be a good fit for me. “
Rector will assume the role of point guard, which would allow Rutgers to take Myles Mack off the ball a bit more.
“I’m just a person that can make plays,” Rector said. “I’m a playmaker. I get my teammates open shots so that will be a good addition to the team.”
And his high school coach is confident Rector – who’s averaging 15 points and six assists this season – will be just that.
“Shane is a point guard that can create offense for himself and others with superior ball-handling ability. He is a leader on and off the court and a great teammate,” Johnson said. “He is a leader on and off the court and a great teammate.
“Rutgers is getting a great kid and a great student.”
